Outreach Staff Provides HIV Educational Opportunities
Careteam, Inc. Prevention staff provides HIV educational opportunities for groups across the Waccamaw District upon request. Educational programs are appropriately designed for different age groups. Education ranges from HIV 101 to abstinence and safer sex education. Some groups who may be interested in these educational sessions are youth and school groups, church groups, women's groups, Sororities and Fraternities and, health education groups. If you are interested in further information about educational opportunities for your group, please call the Myrtle Beach at 236-9000 and ask for the Prevention Coordinator.
Careteam, Inc. has recently added a special outreach program for African American churches. This program is designed to provide assistance to Pastors and other church leaders allowing them to develop their own HIV awareness education programs. These programs are designed to fit the individual church's belief and teaching.
African Americans and particularly African American women are the fastest growing at-risk-for-HIV-infection group of people. The vast majority of these individuals are heterosexual (men and women) and very few are IV drug users. We must act now to educate and dispell the old myths that only gay men and IV drug users get HIV. We beleive the fastest way to do that is through our faith communities. Until we unerstand who is at risk for infection, HIV will continue its rapid growth in our communites of color.
